Swedish House Mafia: Save The World (official music video)

We’ve already expressed our sorrows about Swedish House Mafia’s latest single “Save the World”, but the just released music video for the song makes us even more bewildered as to what direction the trio is headed in. The video starts out with innocent people in nasty predicaments, such as being carjacked, mugged, or robbed, and proceeds to ask the innocuous question of “who’s going to save the world tonight?” The answer, according to the video at least, are cute K9s who pounce on evildoers and show up in fortuitous locations. It’s not that the cinematography is bad (quite the contrary, it’s pretty good), but that the whole thing is just a little bizarre. Seriously though, we can’t quite decide if this video is a good extended metaphor, or is actually just as silly as it seems on the surface. One thing’s for sure though: this video is a far cry from the topless women and Ibiza club scene of SHM’s previous video for “Miami 2 Ibiza,” and we definitely thought those two made for a winning combination. Let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Chris Leek

Stop stirring controversy for the sake of controversy. The song may not have met the hype that was built around it but whose fault is that? Save The World isn’t my favorite song either, but SHM was obviously just having fun with this video.

You’re a decent writer but your pretentious tone is getting old so please cut the bullshit….

  • nick

I actually really enjoy the song itself however the video doesnt do it any benefit.  It is quite bizarre, but more importantly I dont think it correlates with the songs meaning or message at all…unless Save  The World was inspired by puppies…

Yeah they can have fun with it, but the video really ruined the song for me.  It could have been this amazing/epic piece but instead was just laughable.

    And you dont sound pretentious.

  • Snyder

The video is not what I was expecting. After the teaser I thought we will have some action. The beginning of the video looked decent but choosing dogs as heros wasn`t the best idea I think. However the song is great and still the number one for me.

  • amber

love the song, love the video. house music shouldn’t always be about topless women & out of control parties. feel the music, feel the love!

  • Ethan

How can you call yourselves music enthusiasts and not appreciate Save the World for the song that it is. Just because it doesn’t have the same club vibe as One or Miami 2 Ibiza, and the video doesn’t feature topless women, doesn’t mean that the song itself can’t be as powerful. That’s just a shallow observation to point out. I’ve heard this song live when SHM played it, and the emotion and energy in the crowd was something unparalleled. Your “sorrows” about their latest single makes you guys just seem like bandwagon music lovers who like a nice beat and drop that you can dance to, and disregard masterpieces like this one.

  • Bjam

Now that you mention it this Jacob guy does sound pretentious, gross.

  • Chris Leek

Wowwwwww. You know what is even more pretentious than your writing style?? Censoring me.

(I previously commented on Jacob’s pretentious tone but he removed that portion of my comment)

  • Emma

Shame on you Dancing Astronaut. I thought you guys supported open discussion? Jacob offered his opinion, why can’t Chris? Please don’t run this site like China runs its country, I actually like some of the music on here..

  • I DJ for a living

”We” didn’t express our “sorrows”…you did Jacob. Seems like most of us liked the song. Who are you to speak for the rest of us?

  • Anonymous

I agree in full. Hearing this track being dropped at Masquerade Motel was, and i quote Ethan, “unparalleled”. The energy was almost palpable.

  • harvey d

Jesus Christ…give the kid a break, He’s a good writer, no reason to hate on him simply because he has an opinion or because he has a more complex vocabulary than you.  He is simply reporting on the music scene and offering his opinion as commentary.  However, I do disagree with censorship.

  • Harvey D

Keep the comments easy people, no reason to attack the writer, however I will mention that in a previous comment defending the writer I had tried to offer some open minded commentary and I get censored…..not cool.  Censorship is appalling.

I will always love the members of swedish house mafia, individually or in the trio.  However, this video is a complete fail.  I wanted to try to like it but no.  FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL.  No extended metaphor, just no.  I would have even been okay with a poverty stricken video and abstract metaphors in that direction if they wanted to appeal to more audiences but this is just way too much of a stretch.  Plus Schulman’s right, we ALL love parties, girls, and positive vibes.  My only defense for them is that maybe this song/video tandem are an attempt to fully rape the american mass market.  If this was the goal, job well done because as much as we can hate on it that’s where the money really is.  My nephew was in the car with me the other day and his little friends went nuts when this song came on the radio.  Fortunately, I’ve exposed my nephew to electro house n the likes but these other little fuckers are usually begging for bieber and the black eyed peas.  I first saw this song live at the 2nd Masquerade in Miami and compared to the unveiling of “One” I can’t even get into how disappointed I was.  That’s for another day.  However, their sets continue to improve and exponential rate and at the end of the day, they’re still launching themselves to the top of the DJ world.  Nothin but love for the swedes.

  • Tyler Odwin

I will add though even though I was a bit disappointed when this song was first unveiled the entire crowd went nuts.  Got to admit it is pretty fun when you can all yell in unison to a melody.  It’s a good song no matter what we “want” to hear from them.

I’m not at all trying to be fake or pretentious and I’m sorry if I came off that way. Truth be told, I was driving yesterday and Save the World came on and I raged in my car. It’s definitely a good song, but I was simply commenting on how it seems more pop-sounding than anything else by SHM up to this point (and tbh, that kills me).

In terms of my “censorship”, I also deleted the part where you complimented my writing skills, so I thought it evened out. You’re entitled to your own opinion, but I don’t exactly understand what’s so “pretentious” about this post…

  • http://engadget.com/editor/jacob-schulman Jacob Schulman

They’re 100% trying to go mainstream and I can’t blame them for it. Still, individually they are sticking to their roots, and this is only one of the very early releases from “Swedish House Mafia” on Virgin. Hopefully they don’t ruin the brand by trying to make it something that Americans will like in addition to Europeans, but who knows.

  • http://engadget.com/editor/jacob-schulman Jacob Schulman

Aaaaaaand Save the World just came on BBC Radio 1. It’s gonna be a summer anthem no doubt about it.

  • Emma

Aaaaaaaand the award for the biggest censoring douchebag author on this site goes to…..

    *drum roll*

    JACOB SCHULMAN!

  • Emma

As if deleting anything Chris Leek said was okay! Fuck everything about this.

  • http://engadget.com/editor/jacob-schulman Jacob Schulman

    What is your problem?

  • Erica Grayson

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here because I’d caused enough of a ruckus with Senthil whose posts have been mostly good since.

But what in the heavenly hell were you thinking Mr. Jacob Schulman? What made you think it was 100% OKAY to remove PORTIONS of what a commenter wrote about your writing style? What, because you didn’t like that he called you a PRETENTIOUS ASS because of what YOU wrote, you thought it okay to partially muffle him?

I’m sorry, but your lack of foresight and genuine remorse is disgusting. Grow some balls and some journalistic integrity. The man deserves a GENUINE apology and not some half-assed middle of the road statement.

I think her problem is your lack of integrity

  • dejavoodoo

LMAO i cant believe this Shulman dude deleted like half your post. bahaha what a joke

  • dejavoodoo

no wait he deleted even more so it “evens out” ROFL

  • Rommel

Hey SHM, great timing for the release, maybe these talented K9′s can “Save The World” tomorrow since it’s supposed to end LOL

I was waiting for another kind of video coming from SHM  but at least it give us a message and the bulldog is super strong hahaha

  • John Boi

    Y so serious???

Is it necessary for every video to have a powerful message that has to be uncovered. Is it not possible to blow ur budget to make a video that is able to put a smile on someone’s face.Simply a feel good video for a “uplifting” song.

  • Awkdjaiowd

I think it is quite appropriate given the latest public facination with K9s following the obama attack

  • 6mal

i think shm’s just trying to be indie with the videos which obviously they’ve failed at

  • http://bhousedown.com Javier Cardona

You know what… This may not be as agressive as “Miami to Ibiza” or “one” but I think the meaning is what counts the most. Yes, the dogs in the video have no significance in my eyes and I agree 100% with  @5e6373a9eb4eb5c37df6291338d35e39:disqus . Still a great track overall, just have to let it marinate in your ears for a bit

The take home message is that even animals have more compassion than us humans.  The question “who’s gonna save the world” goes unanswered, but the video makes one thing clear… not the human race!

You have to listen to it live to appreciate the song. It is an amazing experience.

THE DOGS ARE SO DAMN CUTE.

    :D
