da_top10_jan2012

Want an easy way to make sure you are up to date on all the latest, best music? Dancing Astronaut takes a look at the top 10 tracks of December based on a combination of reader feedback, track quality, editorial preference & critical reception.

The first month of 2012 has seen an incredible slew of huge tracks dropped. Deadmau5, Dirty South, Axwell & Afrojack are among the top artists with tracks out this month. Check after the break for our full top 10 and to see who has started of 2012 with a bang!

10. Walden – Brightness (Original Mix)
You know you must be doing something right when you are 18 and already being featured on Pete Tong’s Essential Mix. The sound is definitely Avicii-esque, but with more of a retro, disco-era flair. We can’t wait to see what else Walden has in store for us in 2012 – we expect big things!

9. Afrojack & R3hab – Prutataaa (Dada Life Remix)
The Dada Life remix of “Prutataaa” is thick and heavy in bass. This sounds very similar to the original mix with just a little more weight behind it – this might make your heart thump when this is dropped.

8. Tommy Trash – Cascade (Original Mix)
Featuring a more progressive sound than some of his other work, “Cascade” still retains the classic Tommy Trash hallmarks. Signature claps and kick drums, the slick synths and a big-room melody combine to create an absolute TUUNEEE.

7. Zedd – Slam The Door (Original Mix)
Zedd’s starting the year off right with his newest release, “Slam The Door.” The track takes the listener on one hell of a ride – from a piano build-up to an aggressive electro beat with droning synths – and includes a vocal sample to give the track a sense of humor.

6. Moguai – Mpire (Original Mix)
With its driving energy and two different, yet equally engaging breakdowns, this track is undoubtedly one of Moguai’s best productions to date.

5. Deadmau5 – Cthulhu Dreams (Original Mix)
Deadmau5 reworks his own track “Cthulu Sleeps” and gives it a little more punch with a different chord progression and a heavier drop. The man behind the Mau5trap empire continues to impress.

4. Dirty South & Thomas Gold ft. Kate Elsworth – Eyes Wide Open (Original Mix)
The all-star team behind “Alive”  combine again to create another incredible track.  Kate Elsworth’s beautiful vocals float hauntingly over anthemic synths that have Dirty South written all over them.

3. Hardwell – Spaceman (Original Remix)
The 23 year old Dutchman continues to impress. After a 2011 that saw tracks like “Zero76″, “Encoded” and “Catch Your Fall,” Hardwell is showing no signs of stopping as he continues to pump out hits like “Spaceman.” Prepare yourself for the bass heavy drop in this track because it hits VERY hard.

2. Ivan Gough & Feenixpawl ft. Georgi Kay – In My Mind (Axwell Mix)
Axwell keeps killing it with the remixes. His remix of “Resurrection” was absolutely huge and he does it again with his mix of “In My Mind.” One would have to think in any other month this would definitely reach the top spot. This has just been released on Axtone Records and is sure to be one of the tracks of the year.

1. Afrojack ft. Shermanology – Can’t Stop Me (Original Mix)
Currently number 1 on Beatport and gaining our Anthem Status, “Can’t Stop Me” runs away with our top track of January. We predict this will be a huge crossover hit as it successfully straddles the line between true electro house and slightly more mainstream dance-pop. If you haven’t heard this yet, stop wasting time and listen to our track of the month.

As the only producer with 2 entries on our top tracks list, Producer of the Month goes to Afrojack for his efforts “Prutataaa” & “Can’t Stop Me.”

Woulda liked to see a list about the songs YOU Thought were the best, not the media (eg Afrojack)

  • seb

In My Mind > Can’t Stop Me, easily

  • HMM

you need to clarify that these are the best tracks RELEASED in january – not that actually came to rise in january.

..otherwise, the eric prydz remix of m83 – midnight city would be indisputably #1.

  • Evan Henry Catlett

Am I the only one that thinks Can’t Stop Me is pretty lame?

can’t stop me no is terrible. most generic sounding song out there. doesnt sound like afrojack at all, more like guetta. can’t believe you’d put that #1 over everything else. this isnt a pop list

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nick-Ottrando/1807776787 Nick Ottrando

    no, its awful

  • maxx

    1. Axwell didn’t make remix on Resurrection, it’s a Re-Cut.
    2. There was music sound like Avicii even before Avicii, so there’s simply nothing like Avicii-esque.

*There were music, which sounded [...]

…And the beginning synth sounds like that corny Calvin Harris rip-off that Chris Brown used for whatever the name of that track was. I’m sorry but Can’t Stop Be is garbage. Love afrojack and I love his festival sets even more, but sir you have produced straight poo poo on this one.

    all day and all year

It’s supposed to be, they’re the best songs for a reason – most of them are quality, which makes them popular! Do you want them to put something noboby has heard of? People are going to bitch no matter what haha

  • TJ

The single isn’t great, but have you heard Can’t stop me now live? It’s incredible

  • Haha

     lol. There  WAS music

  • MRC

Tracks No. 1 and 2 cleary demonstrate the loss of ideas in the scene right now. Can’t stop me is easily one of the worst Afrojack Tracks ever, same for In my mind and Axwell, this is Kiddie Dance Music with no substance. This has nothing to do with the quality dance music those guys delivered a few years back. Everything concentrating so much on the US market right now, and this is how it sounds. And popularity doesn’t equals quality, that’s a well known fact.
In Europe only the kids go for this sound, all established DJs are turning away from this sound, going back to real house music again.

  • MAMA DEATH

I get what you’re saying, but still you are so narrowminded. “popularity doesn’t equals quality, that’s a well known fact”? Yeah you’re right, and while popularity doesn’t equal quality, writing off music with the massive generalities you use is moronic. You seriously haven’t been to many maintstream European festivals, have you? They play almost exactly the SAME stuff they play in the US, all the mainstream DJs. And everyone goes CRAZY for it. So maybe you either don’t really have good experience, or you are just projecting your opinion far wider than it really is realized in others. I’m pretty sure that the US taking up EDM and more specifically house, like a sponge, has opened up the idea that there even is an EDM “mainstream.” Not even in Europe could something have been classified as mainstream house that well, 5 years ago.

On a side note, I agree with you regarding Can’t Stop Me Now. It is a pretty good track for about a minute, live, but recorded, it’s the most bland piece I’ve heard that is even remotely popular. And I love a lot of Afrojack’s tracks and shows, so it hurts me to say that. As for In My Mind, are you serious? It’s not Axwell’s best work by any means, but it is a pretty good track.

  • Asd

Pretty sure can’t stop me now is terrible as a house song or any type of song get off afrojacks nuts he’s just a guetta want to be but with have the talent

  • Jabhrobertson

I remember when DA used to recommend songs that weren’t just a copy + paste of the beatport top 10…
