Madeon drops impressive minimix on Radio 1, proves DJing isn’t dead

Madeon EDC NYC

In an age where DJ skills and set preparation are rightfully scrutinized, one artist continues to lead a new wave . Of course, we’re talking about Madeon — the young phenomenon whose impressive studio talents mirror that of his live performances. A rarity in today’s EDM scene, you won’t get generic outro-intro transitions in his mixes. Everything is fast-paced, with greater emphasis on harmonics as opposed to simple beat-matching. So who better to take on one of Annie Mac’s Five Minute Minimixes than Madeon?

Compiling 93 tracks in 5 minutes (roughly 3.3 seconds per song) is nothing short of astonishing, but that’s what makes Madeon, well, Madeon.  The launch pad master sampled everything from Lady Gaga and the Beatles, to Deadmau5 and Daft Punk, making his previous “Pop Culture” mash-up/mix look like child’s play.

    BEATLES*** not beetles

  2. efren says:

This is like Girl Talk on steroids

  3. andrew says:

this involves no DJing… this is a studio production. and if u think hes doing this “on the fly” ur naive.

  4. andrew is a hater says:

just because people don’t use vinyls and 1980′s equipment doesn’t mean it’s not djing

  5. andrew says:

not a hater, just a realist. there was no crowd to hear this set live. madeon is a great producer but his DJ skills are certainly not that of a real club DJ. the term DJ gets thrown around way too much and is misused all the time.
his sets are preworked, but sure he “twiddles” his VSTs knobs during his live sets and fucks with the highs and lows.

”A DJ is a guy that comes into a room… scans it in… is like: ‘Okay. What
do I need to do to get these people to go bananas?” – Sebastian
    Ingrosso

  6. Gabe says:

I don’t really care what he used to make this. Impressive regardless.

  7. Jon Powell says:

You’re right, lets toss out common nomenclature so that we can preserve your 90′s understanding of what a DJ is.

  8. DaftBot says:

    really love this.

no one makes it live, if you actually think that, you are an idiot

no one does it live, if you think that, you are an idiot

  11. Z says:

I think what andrew is trying to say is that he did not record this in one take, as you would do with a “DJ” set. He clearly tried multiple ways to mash these tracks up, use the vocal shots, riffs, etc. This obviously requires a shitload of work and talent, but he definitely listened and re listened to it over and over, and mixed/mastered it before sending it over to Radio 1.

Unbelievable nonetheless. Blows that united states of pop thing out of the water

  12. Truth says:

I think everyone needs to watch this video and relax… he is no DJ, he is an artist simple as that…

  13. Boss Hog says:

I’ve yet to see him do that routine “live” in front of a crowd. Got video of a live performance of this mystical pop culture video?

  14. Z says:

DJing Is dying… producing and programming not so much.
nicely done nevertheless… just not sure where like 93 samples came from cause i only heard like 20… lol…

  15. z says:

cute kid tho I wish my rents bought me fancy studio equipment and music production lessons when i was 9!

  16. Boss Hog says:

This is not “DJing”. DJ is short for “disc jockey” and he is doing neither. He’s chopping up the tracks in the computer then triggering the bits on a launchpad (mind you it’s all sync’d) or for this minimix he arranged it all in Ableton. There needs to be a new term associated with this type of performance because it is not “DJing”. By diluting the term only makes the debate linger. Not taking anything away from what he’s doing either because it’s impressive and takes a lot of talent to arrange. On a side note, have you ever seen him pull off something like this live? I’ve only seen him trigger tracks live and nothing at the technical intricacy level like the “pop culture” video.

  17. Boss Hog says:

thank you, that was fantastic to watch!

  18. musiqlover says:

Lots of people do. Just not in the pop side of dance culture. Some even still do it all analog. So why call someone an idiot. When your uninformed…..

  19. sam says:

I saw him him do the entire pop culture mashup live in sydney last year.
