Nine stabbed at Dublin music festival, one dead from suspected overdose (updated)

Phoenix-Park

BBC is reporting that nine people have been stabbed at  event in Dublin’s Phoenix Park headlined by Swedish House Mafia, with two of the victims “seriously injured.” One 23 year-old man is in custody in conjunction with the stabbing, but investigations are ongoing to determine whether anyone else was involved. Concert promoters MCD are on record as saying that “ticket holders entering the site were subject to a search permissible by law,” adding that “every precaution… was taken to ensure the safety and security of the audience at all times.” CCTV footage from the grounds has also been handed over to police for further investigation.

As if the stabbings weren’t enough, the BBC report also states that a 20 year-old attendee died “from a suspected drugs overdose.” According to the outlet, he sought medical care on site but died later in a hospital. The victim has not yet been identified, so if you know anyone who went to the show — officials are advising friends and family to check that loved ones have gotten home safely.

This is clearly a massive tragedy, and we expect more information to continue flowing out as the story unfolds.

Update: It’s worth mentioning that this was not a pure Swedish House Mafia concert, but a larger event with other artists including Snoop Dogg, Tinie Tempah, and Calvin Harris. This article has been updated.

Update 2: SHM’s camp has released an official statement; find it below.

We played a festival in Ireland at the weekend and reports of incidents are coming to us. We didn’t see anything but have asked for all the info and are respectful of the promoter’s need to wait and give us all the clear facts. When we know more we will liase with the Festival promoter directly on what we can do to help but for now we have to respect their request to us that we remain quiet and respectful of their event safety processes. The festival itself was amazing and we had no idea this had happened and neither did the other numerous artists who played. Once we know all the facts we will deal with it in the best way we can. Thank you. Swedish House Mafia.

  2. Justin Marchese says:

It wont at all…out of all the events and festivals one overdose an death is not bad..some people just dont know theyre limits and get way to out of control #rollresponsibly

  3. Idioteque... says:

I’m sorry I feel no sympathy for the dumbass who oded good riddance. Go to these shows for the music not as an excuse to rave out and do stupid shit

  4. GuestAKAyourResident says:

The EDM scene = plenty of dumbass kids taking street ex and overdosing.
Worrying whether this will put a bad light on the EDM scene is…well…come on.

  5. anonymous says:

    Where’s the PLUR???

  6. Crunkmasterflex says:

I don’t want to come across as a dickhead or that I don’t care, but stabbings or similar acts of violence like this never happen at Insomniac festivals, and they seem to be some of the only festival promoters constantly getting bad press…

  7. meow says:

the companies surrounding the festivals have single handedly destroyed the meaning of PLUR. the days when you went to a fest and made new friends, smiled at people who were dressed strangely and enjoyed the music as one is over. it is all about the hype and the money, and just as hiphop did, edm has gained a bad look for itself and will die too. :(

  8. EDMchi says:

First Swedish house mafia dies now their fans too. What is next ?

  9. GrundleSweat says:

9 stabbed at the shm knife party!

  10. human-being says:

i’ve played the classical violin for 13 years and i can tell you one thing, i LOVE EDM for the music that it offers. The EDM scene is DEFINITELY not what you say of it. i personally choose not to do drugs. i go to festivals to enjoy the music.

  11. Idioteque... says:

No because EDM is a noob term, people have been listening to this music for a while now, what he’s referring to is all these kids saying they discovered this music when they were the same kids that made fun people in grade school for listening to this music. It’s a bunch of hypocrites doing drugs essentially. The scene was definitely not about that but that’s what it’s becoming and mainstreams assholes like Tim Berg & Cedric Gervais are only advocating it. If you really want to stop this, then step up against the mainstream assholes.

  12. Mau5 says:

Was Antidote playing at the time(?) because that’s one hell of a knife party.

  13. Tyler says:

With the amount of people that flow through festivals, this was inevitable. It could have happened at any other event. You can’t blame the drugs or the music. (Unless they find out this guy was tripping on some crazy shit like the bath salts that guy in miami took before he ate off someone’s face)

  14. BenjaminFidelCashflowMilste says:

    bahaha

  15. Carms says:

lol that’s such a fucked up comment but so hilarious at the same time…

  16. phat says:

    das wass uph. lolololololol

  17. no but really this is sad and sucks

  18. TopdeK says:

There were actually 3 ODs at the gig. Two of them were just found outside the park so they’re trying not to relate them. But let’s face it…they more than likely were. It really sucks that some people just can’t go to a gig and enjoy themselves in a civil manner. Each to their own devices, but why carry a knife?

  19. StevieB says:

I was at the gig and all i can say is that their was very little done to stop drugs and weapons getting in. 1 in every 4 or 5 people were given a very quick “pat down” and that was it. MCD the promoters did a very bad job of organising the event.

  20. Feargal says:

I was at the concert and the promoters definitely did not take “every precaution”. There was a quick 5 second frisk for some people when entering the gates, and others simply just ran through. If I wanted to smuggle a knife through I easily could have. There was a serious lack of security as well. Even if fights broke out, the small amount of security who were there couldn’t have controlled it.

  21. Caladona says:

I was at it. An it was crazy! As another person said, not much was done in terms of searching. I wasnt even asked for my ticket or anythin! Anyone could of got in! This mars what was an unbelievable day! Very sad about the overdose!

  22. Caladona says:

    hahahaha thats hilarious!

  23. says:

don’t care. why do I come to your site still if this is the shit you report on? Are you going to start pulling statistics from every major club across the world on how many stabbings & overdoses there are WEEKLY at some places?

  24. jimbo says:

Save us your self righteous bullshit bro

  25. VE says:

why are you posting a huge SHM pic with this article? the fact that they were headlining has nothing to do with the violence but by having SHM next to STABBING, it makes it seem so.

  26. Atomisk says:

Because drug users and people who use plur TOTALLY aren’t self righteous either. /sarcasm. You would not believe some of the shit I hear from drugees trying to defend their ways.

  27. Atomisk says:

The days of underground raves and plur were the worst. We finally have a chance to go legal.

  28. Atomisk says:

What the fuck does violin have to do with EDM? Op nailed it, everyone looks down on the scene. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably has their brain rotted too much for Molly to even notice.

  29. Getyourfactsstraight says:

His toxicology came back…. Not on Bath Salts.

  30. Daiye says:

I suppose you haven’t gone to any good festivals this year, then.

  31. BonerJamz says:

Atomisk im gonna slap u, u silly turd burglar

  32. IVOjr says:

  33. Suku Rivera says:
