It’s rare that we get as excited to see a vocalist’s name attached to a track as the producer’s, but that’s the case with Alesso and Matthew Koma’s “Years.” Matthew Koma is responsible for the lyrics in “Spectrum,” “Sparks,” and now what could be Alesso’s biggest track of the year. “Years” is incredibly uplifting with the vocals perfectly blending with the chord progression. Artists seem to be lining up to work with Koma because everything he touches turns to gold. With “Years” and his upcoming collaboration with Dirty South, “City of Dreams,” Alesso seems to be unstoppable.

    Massive track

  2. bill says:

sounds very generic, not impressive to be honest imo.

  3. yan colon says:

he shouldve released it a while back, when it was barely being listened. now, its being played out so much that not many are willing to listen to it. its still a great track tho.

  4. Jon Powell says:

Unfortunately kind of true. Great song though.

I think the main gripe I have about this song is that the piano roll seems to be doing all the work here and is the controlling focal point of another formula bigroom track. It carries one of Koma’s less inspired lyrical writes (Spectrum being far superior) and the particularly standard progression. Porter Robinson did a finer job employing the mesmerizing feel Alesso seemed to be seeking with effortless finesse on Language. Admittedly, I’m being a little harsh on ol’ Alesso here and whether or not this is spectacular, it’ll obviously be one of the biggest tracks of the Year(s).

  6. VE says:

wow, a piano and big synths! never heard anything like this before. lolz.

  7. A Monkey says:

I agree with your post, except for the part about it being one of Matthew’s worse writes. Alesso clearly wanted an uplifting vocal for this song, and at least Matthew managed to stay clear of the stereotypical “feel-good” writes. He’s found a way to make a feel-good song not generic. I think that Spectrum is a completely different beast in that he was certainly not going for the same type of feeling. Personally, I am a bit more impressed with the Spectrum write as well, but I also think that Matthew’s work here is actually better given that there was a lot less freedom in terms of what could have been written for Years as opposed to Spectrum.
