Gregori Klosman makes his Cielo debut (review)

Last Thursday I ventured to Cielo — one of my favorite nightclubs in New York — to see Gregori Klosman make his debut. For those unaware, Cielo has been in business for over ten years and has hosted some of the most legendary names in the industry. It commands superiority above all other establishments in terms of music heritage, room-to-sound set up, and overall experience of seeing a DJ put his best foot forward. Unlike other NYC venues, Cielo is very straightforward with its bookings and does not generally venture outside the pastures of tech, deep, and minimal house. When someone like Klosman comes into town – bearing to his catalogue of tech house gems – its something to get excited about. Read past the break for my take on his debut appearance.

It’s no secret that Gregori Klosman is more generally associated with his progressive electro house sound, and performing at Cielo would offer an opportunity for him to play something we wouldn’t normally expect. On my way to Cielo I checked Twitter to see what kind of mood he was in, hoping he would give me some kind of a hint as to what the night would entail. To my excitement, we both had the same idea.

As promised, he set the first hour off with tech house bombs that really got the packed house on their feet. Hearing a classic like Dirty South and Bob Sinclar’s “The Russian March” from the beginning was a telltale sign that Gregori was going to venture outside his normal playbook. Next he turned to disco tech house with Real El Canario’s “International Style.” It was only ten minutes into the night and you already knew this wasn’t going to be a run-of-the-mill Klosman set.

He followed with one of his older original productions “Bombota,” into a bootleg of his collaboration with Tristan Garner on “Fucking Down,” with the Maurizio Gubellini & Delayers remix to Nari & Milani’s “Atom.”

At the 40 minute mark of his set, a sudden change occurred. Gregori played Tom Fall’s heavy electro trance song “iROK” with the often-used acappella of Justice’s “We Are Your Friends.” My hopes for a mainstream-free set had faded, as hit after hit started to pile up. From Hardwell’s “Encoded,” to Porter Robinson’s “Language,” to an even more over used acappella of Goyte’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” over his own “Minibar,” I was starting to wonder if Klosman was straying from the game plan.

With three hours to work with, I figured Klosman would bounce back and forth between genres to please everyone, but for the remainder of the night he strayed from tech house and favored the mainstream sound. Alesso’s “Years” was followed by the popular “Quasar/Coming Home” bootleg. Deniz Koyu’s “Bong” followed suit. Dada Life’s “Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker” was played, and then one of the notable songs of the night got its playtime. When Zedd’s Spectrum EP came out, we were delighted to see Tristan Garner team up with Klosman on one of the remixes and even more happy to hear it on the Cielo system. The remix was followed by tech house maestro Federico Scavo’s remix to Chris Lake & Lazy Rich “Stand Alone,” which restore hope in Klosman’s techier side.

For the remainder of his set, Klosman split his time playing progressive, electro, and tech house. Although his set could have done without back-to-back Skrillex songs, I sensed Klosman was trying to test his boundaries with the eager New York crowd. Hearing the set end with Funkagenda’s “Splinter” and Arno Cost’s “Lise” was reason enough to put a smile on my face and leave my complaints behind.

The Bottom Line

Dance.Here.Now brought in Gregori Klosman for his debut performance and the night was an overall success. You rarely see Cielo get to the capcity that it was at, and it was clear that people were there for a wild night of fun music and good vibes. With such a versatile set, we were impressed to see a side of Klosman that we wouldn’t normally expect. For those not lucky enough to be in attendance, Klosman recorded his entire three-hour set and posted it on his SoundCloud page as his latest Klosmania podcast. Have a listen and enjoy the full track list below.
