Corey Baker is probably a name with which you’re not yet familiar but in this case, we encourage you to give his latest and greatest, The Chase EP, a listen. Corey Baker is better known as a member of Wildkats, a UK-based trio who’ve released records on labels from Hot Creations to Get Physical to Akbal Music, but this is his first solo production and it’s out this week on MEXA Records.
The EP spotlights three original productions and two remixes (from Nikko Gibler and Tone of Arc) and they are all excellent slices of deep and tech house sounds. We enjoyed this EP front start to finish. “The Chase,” for example, builds off muted and reverbed vocal clips and melts away into a full-on synthed out deep melodic break. “Freaky Tales,” a collaboration with Jon Lee, leans more heavily on more classic, manual drum machine elements and spooky minor chords over Baker’s bassline. “Baked Fresh” with MEXA Records head Louie Fresco is also a fun track with spiraling toplines and squelching basslines to boot. This track is already way up Tone of Arc’s alley, but they replace most of the original elements of Baker’s track with their unique and classic “Expressionist” sound.
