Skrillex releases ‘Leaving’ EP, a step in a new direction

It’s been a while since we last heard from OWSLA label boss Skrillex. With his first original productions since “Make It Bun Dem,” Skrillex is starting off the new year with a brand new EP entitled Leaving, and it’s some of the most interesting material to come from the mind of Sonny Moore yet. The EP was released to fans last night via OWSLA’s new subscription service the Nest, and contains three brand new originals: “Leaving,” “The Reason,” and “Scary Bolly Dub.” Click past the break to listen to all three tracks, and subscribe to the Nest to receive all three originals in pristine WAV format.

Picking up on the new wave of garage that’s characterized the output of rising producers such as Disclosure and Flume, Skrillex has crafted a deep, drum-laden production with “Leaving” that employs clear garage influence. “Leaving” is a step in a new direction for Skrillex, and it’s undoubtedly our favorite track off the EP.

“The Reason” represents another intriguing direction from Skrillex, as he voyages into the realm of midtempo. The first half of the track is mellow, with clean kicks and glittering synths, before the track picks up in the second half with some familiar high-pitched Skrillex samples.

“Scary Bolly Dub” is the polarizing “brostep” side of Skrillex we’re all too familiar with. You will either hate it or love it. As Skrillex writes, “‘Scary Bolly Dub” is a song I’ve been playing in my sets for a while. I use it more as a DJ tool, but I wanted you guys to have it.”
