Editors’ Selections: Week of May 20th, 2013

Editors’ Selections is an opportunity for your favorite Dancing Astronaut contributors to talk about some of the music they’re listening to that we might not always get an opportunity to post about from week to week. Sometimes it’s out there, sometimes it’s obscure, but you’ll always get a peek into what we’re loving behind closed doors.

Andrew:

The Phantom’s Revenge – Death By Chillwave (Pablo J & The Lobsterettes Remix)
The Phantom’s Revenge was one of my favorite electronic acts back during the bloghouse era and I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the name The Lobsterettes so I gave this remix a listen. To my surprise, it was a funky throwback with a classic disco sample and even though I’m allergic to shellfish I took full advantage of the free download.
Leah:

Lana Del Rey – Young & Beautiful (Marcus Schossow Summer Remix)

This song makes me envision falling in love with Leo in the Gatsby mansion while we rave together 1920s style. It’s that good.

Allegra:

Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness (MK Feel It In The Air Remix)

There is occasionally a song you hate to love. Luckily, that’s where remixes come in, and Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” is a guilty pleasure made all the more palatable by MK’s “Feel It In The Air” remix. Keeping that lilty chorus that sinks its teeth in my subconscious, the remix cuts the melodrama and replaces it with a tech beat and rumbling bassline all while keeping the emotion necessary to fit the mood. So if you’ve also got the summertime sadness or simply want to hear what LDR sounds like in a tech setting, give MK’s remix a spin and indulge.

Mike:

Daughter x AnTenNae – Get Lucky (Daft Punk cover)

It’s one thing to remix a song, but to provide a cover is a whole different ballpark. Daughter has beautifully reimagined Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” into a soft and emotive ballad, and, with the help of trap producer Antennae, the cover has culminated in a breathtakingly spiritual rendition.

Matt:

Minnesota – Stardust Redux

My musical pendulum is swinging all over the place these days. Eager to keep that the case, I approached our venerable bass music editor Mike for some track recommendations. He sent me the latest EP from Minnesota, a Californian atmospheric dubstep artist, and I’ve had it on repeat since. “Stardust Redux” is my favorite of the two, owing to its masterful use of melodies and complex rhythms. Thumbs akimbo.
Dan:
Superpoze – Pavane (Fakear Remix)
Once in a while, Kitsune drop a track that blows my mind. This month, it was cordially delivered by French producer Fakear, whose liberal manipulation of genre hallmarks has seldom been done poetic justice by any blogger I have found. Behind the wheel of Superpoze’s forthcoming single, ambient progressions and melodies run free. His take on “Pavane” plays out with the substance of a movie score – a wholehearted reminder that France’s eclectic musical overhaul behind closed doors and away from the repercussions of RAM.
Cara:
Mount Kimbie – Made To Stray
Is it a tad predictable that I’m a “music critic” in love with Mount Kimbie? Probably. Does it deter me from giggling with joy in anticipation of their new record coming out next week? Nah.
