Kaytranada & Suicideyear stroll the trap on Bromance’s 10th EP release

Bromance captain Brodinski has never hidden his affinity for the burgeoning trap subgenre, in fact, he’s made a point of incorporating its tracks into his live sets from Boiler Room Berlin to Hard Miami. Now the French label owner is turning over his 10th EP’s stage to Montreal producer Kaytranada and Baton Rouge-based Suicideyear, allowing them to showcase their bass-heavy brilliance for the Bromance faithful.

Kaytranada’s “Free Things in Life” layers a catchy synth progression above plodding 808 kicks and atmospheric chordal stabs, employing tried and true hip-hop transitional builds and unanticipated beat repeats to keep listeners’ ears entertained. Suicideyear’s “Finale” is a patiently upbeat number that features escalating melodic layers in advance of the stuttered kick and snare pattern that defines its dynamics. Each track clocks in under four minutes, and while neither appears calculated to take trap by storm, each provides an eclectic and refreshingly unconventional take on a genre that has erred on the staler side as of late.
