Skrillex’s Essential Mix becomes most played piece of content in BBC Radio 1 history
Less than a month ago Skrillex delivered a genre-defying Essential Mix that left fans rejoicing and his detractors with their heads in the sand. As the pioneer of one of the most simultaneously hated and beloved subgenres under dance music’s massive umbrella he is often met with criticism and disdain, but his Essential Mix proved what many already knew: Sonny Moore is the real deal. Elevating the success of his mix, OWSLA announced yesterday that Skrillex’s EM has become the “single most played piece of content in BBC Radio 1 history across all media.”
His name alone is enough to draw huge crowds, but it was likely the well-deserved hype around his unexpected track inclusions that put him over the top. Many have tried — and failed — to innovate but Mr. Moore followed through with a mix worthy of the coveted Essential Mix of the year title.
Got word over the weekend that @Skrillex @EssentialMix was the single most played piece of content in @BBC_Radio_1 history across all media
