Editors’ Selections: Week of August 12th, 2013

Editors’ Selections is an opportunity for your favorite Dancing Astronaut contributors to talk about some of the music they’re listening to that we might not always get an opportunity to post about from week to week. Sometimes it’s out there, sometimes it’s obscure, but you’ll always get a peek into what we’re loving behind closed doors.

Allegra:

Lorde – Million Dollar Bills (Easy Girl Remix)

Normally I spiral into a jealous fit when singers in the under-18 camp break into the big time (all those voice lessons for nothing!) but New Zealand’s teen phenom Lorde has churned out some undeniably dope tracks, and LA’s Easy Girl has just made one of them even more fly. The remix vixen took on “Million Dollar Bills,” making it more indie and synthy and yummy than the original with a fuller sound rounded out with cymbal rolls and reverb. Best part is it’s a free download – go get it.

Cara:

Fort Romeau – Stay True

The latest release out of the world famous Ghostly International is a four track EP from young house revivalist Fort Romeau, and the title track “Stay True” leans heavily (and effectively) on a driving arpeggiated  synth among washed out bridges and leisurely kicks and claps. It’s one of those tracks that immediately caught my attention, and I’ve been listening ever since.

Andrew:

STRFKR – While I’m Alive (Lenny Kiser Remix)

The best part about writing about music is sharing and discovering artists you’ve never heard of. As a music writer, new tracks come across your desk at a breakneck pace and oftentimes it takes some serious focus to find the time to sit and listen. Thankfully I decided to press play on Lenny Kiser’s remix of “While I’m Alive” when I was unwinding the other night. With only 297 Soundcloud followers the San Francisco native deserves all the attention he can get and this space-y, disco-tinged remix is undeniable proof of his potential.
Dan:
Gero – Turn Around (feat. Kullai Timi)
I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that Gero has penned the ultimate poolside house anthem of 2013. Under the guise of Jalapeno Records – A label synonymous with sun kissed club music from across the globe – Kullai Timi’s irresistible top line adds the perfect finishing touches to ‘Turn Around’ – a track bred for the afterhours downtime that I have come to appreciate all the more throughout my five years as a self professed club hound. If rich instrumentation and supple beats is your bag, Gero has it dutifully covered this time around.
Amanda:
Mayster – The Story of Us
“The Story Of Us” is a bonus track off Mayster’s forthcoming debut EP Premise and it’s a proper lead up to the release. Press play and you’ll find that “The Story Of Us” isn’t a romance novel fairytale but rather a sexual narration. The rated R lyrics are accompanied by a booming 4 on the floor beat.
