The story of the M Machine’s Metropolis culminates today with Metropolis Remixed, the third and final portion of their grand endeavor. With nine remixes, including their own re-imagining of “The Palace,” Metropolis Remixed puts the album in a fresh perspective. Like the previous installments, the remix album is best listened to cumulatively, as the track list ventures through familiar vocal and chord infrastructures while placing the tracks in a new space.
Both the Digitalism remix of “Moon Song” and the Kill the Noise remix of “Ghosts in the Machine” were previewed earlier this month and are undoubtedly standouts, yet some of the best renditions lie deep within the release. Robotaki, for instance, puts a mellow house spin on “A King Alone,” while Tantrum Desire turns “Schadenfreude” into a deft drum ‘n’ bass track. Matt Lange’s otherworldly deep-dubstep take on “Shadow in the Rose Garden” is a clear candidate for top remix, yet no song from the album should be discounted.
