Diplo takes his radioshow without friends, delivers two-hour solo mix

Earlier this month, a friendless Diplo took to the duties of his Diplo & Friends BBC Radio 1Xtra slot and delivered a mix solo that, truth be told, didn’t need a supporting cast. Mad Decent‘s mad scientist compiled a twerk saturated, bouncy mix that features plenty of big room/festival sounds, incorporates dance hall and moombahton elements, is packed to the brim with hip-hop inspired remixes, and offers a heavy dose of bass and trap music. This mix screams Diplo, demonstrating exactly why he has become one of the most relevant and sought after music producers around right now.

Diplo’s track list for this installment of his famed Saturday night radioshow reflects his personal style, which oddly went under appreciated in this year’s DJ Mag Top 100 rankings. In a year when funky infusion and commotion have made for a popular sound that’s gaining immeasurable momentum (with Diplo undoubtedly at the helm of it), this mix serves as a great intersection between a diverse blend of genres. He has asserted himself as the figurehead of an entire movement, assisting twerking in becoming one of the biggest pop-culture phenomena of the year, and this mix absolutely represents that. The two hour long studio session includes sounds from Jay Z to Loudpvck, Disclosure to Drake, and everything from Clockwork to Tommy Trash sprinkled in between, bringing a wide array of tempos and genres into one creative collection.

Between beating as the heartbeat of Major Lazer, having just released his own Revolution EP, producing for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, and keeping up as one of the most premier live DJs in the world, it wouldn’t be too far off to say that Diplo could be the hardest working man in music. Good thing he still has time to hang out with friends on Saturday nights, so we can listen in and be a part of the fun too.
