British house veteran Chris Lake has proven a man of many curve balls recently. One minute he’s flaunting heavyset offerings alongside Steve Aoki & Tujamo, the next he’s dropping extended deep house sets on the North American circuit. Now, back on the mark for Ultra Records, the Rising Music head honcho drops another pre-album offering true to the pop-savvy nuances he has subtly teased along the trail. Launched at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show in New York and featured on a more recent ad for Herbal Essences, “Helium” is not to be discounted for extraordinary delivery. With Jareth on topline duties, the track blissfully skims the boundaries of instrumental pop and commercial club music – a divide that Lake’s consistent production quality traverses with considerable ease. Though currently sitting miles away from the big room tendencies that first won him global recognition, “Helium” offers affirmative proof that there is hope yet for the commercial dance crossover.
