Tale of Us & Vaal – Concor EP
Fresh off claiming the coveted number two spot in Resident Advisor’s annual underground poll, dynamic Italian duo Tale of Us are running up the score on their superlative 2013 campaign with a new collaborative EP with Life and Death label-mate Vaal.
Eerie tubular bells and ethereal reverb-soaked softsynths introduce title track “Concor” in exactly the sort of delicately melodic and dark fashion we’ve come to expect from the Berlin-based techno team. Distant throbbing percussion combines with clock-tower chimes and morose pads to lend the track a slight sense of urgency as it meanders from haunting breaks back to the solid ground of temporal techno bass. Enigmatic British producer Vaal takes a solo stage turn on the EP’s B-side “Seahnak,” which strikes a decidedly different tone with its frenetic organ-work above a backdrop of pulsing analog toms.
With Life and Death still basking in the afterglow of Ten Walls’ Requiem, this EP makes for a strong encore by a label that came into its own this year, and appears poised to continue exceeding expectations in 2014.
