Funk android and soulful R&B siren Janelle Monáe receives the remix treatment from the legendary Chocolate Puma on her latest pop hit “Dance Apocalyptic.” The Dutch house duo twist, chop and screw Monae’s original, installing a super-compressed bass line alongside shifty guitar licks and 1950s swing aesthetics. Driven by hollow drums and ribbed synthwork, the duo strip the original down to its most basic elements and then rebuild it on a jagged mass of after hours beat work. It’s a dark spin on the Grammy-nominated, singer-songwriter’s unique style, one that represents both “Dance” and “Apocalyptic” literally when played through a set of speakers.
