Good Morning Mix: deadmau5 at XS Las Vegas
deadmau5 is no stranger to techno. In March, Joel Zimmerman dipped his toes in the genre by releasing a techno track, “Sunspot (White Space Conflict),” via Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 label under the alias testpilot. One month later, he delivered a two-hour live set from his home studio dubbed “full on techno-actual-good-music” – a set that tipped its hat to artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Pryda, Joris Voorn and Miro Pajic. One of Zimmerman’s more recent audio streams, however, involves his techno-infused set at XS Las Vegas. While many may have expected his track selection to remain faithful to his newest album, while(1<2), deadmau5’s performance at XS relied heavily on the underground. A strong opening consisting of “Avarita” seamlessly progresses into “Primate” and “Secondary Complications,” setting a darker tone than most deadmau5 executions. Though classics like “Ghosts n Stuff,” “The Longest Road” and “Strobe” weasel their way in, this may be Joel’s way of informing fans that his fond relationship with techno will not be ending any time soon.
