A common critique of electronically produced music is the lack of actual performance skills in a trade heavily supported by its live experience. From true live acts to critically analyzed “button pushers,” the blurred lines of performance art become transparent with YouTube sensation and Novation Launchpad extraordinaire M4SONIC. After making headlines for signing a multi-album deal with Sony Music and Ultra Records earlier this year, we finally get to hear what the classically trained Australian has up his sleeve.
“Chaos,” off his M4 EP, gets a crisp visual extension with M4SONIC’s signature finger-flailing performance videos. The young Aussie musician begins by keying in a soothing and elegant melodic opening, giving way to an intense electro climax bursting with distorted leads and rhythmically stressed synth plucks. The shifting beat patterns and synth fills continue to keep the song and its visual performance fresh and entertaining throughout the video.
