‘We are different cultures, and we should stay different cultures;’ Seth Troxler speaks on EDM and the underground

During Amsterdam Dance Event’s run of festivities, Seth Troxler was put in command of a microphone in addition to his usual duties behind a pair of CDJs. Known for his unbridled passion for underground dance music and its place within modern electronic music’s totem pole, the American producer spoke on an excess of topics during his “Troxler Tells It How It Is” keynote address.

“We are different cultures, and we should stay different cultures. The underground is stronger than ever, and it can never defeated… And after all the commercialization of the past few years, I think people are really coming back to the idea of real truth in music, the deepness of that. That’s what will sustain it in the future.” Troxler extolled on a room full of attentive listeners.
He then went on to question where electronic music will be in ten or twenty years, “Who here will have the kind of balls to stand up for who we [the underground] really are, and to cherish those ideals? With the influx of wealth being poured into dance music, it’s easy to think all that glitters is gold, but will it really be such a cool place in the next ten to twenty years?”

The producer raises an interesting question given modern electronic music’s surge in popularity. Only time will tell if dance music can keep up with its own unrelenting pace and, according to the Michigan-born star, the music’s true voice still bellows from the underground, “We all have a really good voice in dance music, and in spite of the influence of the commercial side, the undeniable force is still coming from underground culture.”
