Nicki Minaj samples Maya Jane Coles for evocative single ‘Truffle Butter’
The union of Diddy and Guy Gerber came as a relative shock, but few could have pictured Maya Jane Coles rubbing aural shoulders with the ranks of Cash Money’s hip hop elite. The leading lady of underground house music has found herself on Nicki Minaj’s latest stint alongside Drake and Lil’ Wayne, “Truffle Butter,” which samples liberally from Coles’ own “What They Say.”
While the move has already elicited mixed opinions from her devout fan base, Coles has been nothing but joyous herself: “As a producer that only makes music that I love, for me, it’s only an honor to have people from completely different scenes wanting to sample one of my productions,” she wrote on social media.
The move is evidently a passion project from the underground star, as she noted: “I came from a hip hop background, that’s what got me into music in the first place.” Catch the track itself alongside Maya’s electrified instrumental below and prepare to see just how far the floodgates can open for underground crossover capacity in 2015.
