Claptone makes superb Essential Mix debut, ushers in the modern house revival
Every Friday Pete Tong airs the Essential Mix on BBC 1 and every Friday the world’s best DJs spend 2 hours telling their story through music. Last week’s mix was graced by Claptone, the enigmatic and masked talent who has quickly made a name for himself in the modern house revival. The beauty of Pete Tong’s iconic radio show is the complete freedom afforded to his guests. Claptone takes full advantage of that here. Opening with The White Stripes “In The Cold Cold Night” over Vangelis’ “Bicycle Rider,” the Berlin talent establishes an eccentric track selection right out of the gate, skipping between decades with ease. From there you’ve got a handful of his own original work including, “The Music Got Me,” “Control,” and “Secret Lover,” a delightful array of impossible to ignore house grooves and a slew of VIP edits to keep you entertained. Throw in Armand Van Helden’s remix of Tori Amos’s “Professional Widow,” and Claptone’s Essential Mix may just be the most eclecticly and finely-curated broadcast of 2015.
