Brooklyn’s own Phony Ppl got their start in grimy warehouses in New York back in 2011, piecing together vintage funk and dusted-out hip hop into a career that earned them rotation on BBC1 and tour dates with Theophilus London, Erykah Badu, and The Roots. Their stand out, self-released, hit “End of the Night” receives a rework from Philadelphia stand out Louis Futon who beefs up the production with bustling drums and a subtle electronic backbone. Leaving the original’s lo-fi, vintage style intact, Futon’s rendition bridges the gap between Phony Ppl’s classic hip hop style with his own future funk leanings.
