Past confirmation of his departure from What So Not, there hasn’t been much musical collateral to emerge from Flume’s highly influential yet noticeably sparing camp of late. It turns out the Aussie bass-man hasn’t been totally idle away from the road though, with an unexpected remix for UK crooner Sam Smith marking the first fruits to bloom from his recent three-month studio binge. The Aussie heavyweight gives Smith’s “Lay With Me” an unsettling yet inherently beautiful transformation courtesy of those staple lucid melodies and focussed beats that have hallmarked the work of the APRA nominated talent to date. Fans are likely still licking their wounds post-What So Not retirement, but Flume’s latest remix is the reminder we all needed that past his 12-month streak in the limelight, the experimental studio whizz is by no means spent.
