Steve Aoki and the Mayor of LA, Eric Garcetti, plan free EDM show dubbed ‘LAoki’

Los Angeles may be the promised land for producers, managers, and industry hopefuls building their careers, but it’s no secret that the City of Angels has had its fair share of issues with the EDM community over the years. Thankfully the city’s young mayor, Eric Garcetti, is embracing the genre by enlisting Steve Aoki for a free show dubbed “LAoki.” Scheduled to be held in downtown L.A. on Saturday, May 16th on Broadway between 4th and 6th, Aoki’s outdoor takeover plans to bring between 5,000 and 10,000 EDM fans out onto the streets for the massive block party. In order to attend, concertgoers must first sign up for more information on The Mayor’s Volunteer Corps, a move that Garcetti hopes will raise volunteer activity in the city;  “What we are going to get out of this is volunteerism,” he told Billboard, “and we know that we’ll be able to cover our costs because of the economic activity this event will generate. If people sign up for Volunteer Corps and we conservatively get ten percent of those who sign up helping us out in a given year, that’s worth millions of dollars of city resources we spend on things like neighborhood clean-ups and improving our community.”

The event itself will be sponsored by Scion and according to Aoki’s manager the cost of the gig will be coming out of Aoki’s pocket — not the city of Los Angeles.  The show coincides with the May 12th release of Neon Future II, Aoki’s third studio album that includes his Linkin Park collaboration “Darker Than Blood.”
