Meet the camp counselors behind Dirtybird Campout: Claude VonStroke

On October 2, Dirtybird will host the inaugural edition of Dirtybird Campout at Oak Canyon Park. The unique event will put a new spin on the festival experience, providing three days of community-driven camp activities in addition to a stellar music lineup featuring everyone from label regulars like Claude VonStroke and Kill Frenzy, to Route 94, Eprom, &ME and more.

Tying in with the theme of the festival, Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, J. Phlip and more will serve as ‘camp counselors’ at Dirtybird Campout, guiding attendees through a myriad of campground activities such as hiking, kickball, sack races, and talent shows. To get in the spirit of the event, we’ve linked up with Dirtybird for an exclusive interview series grilling the counselors on everything camp-related.

For the first edition of the series, we’ve interviewed Dirtybird head counselor, Claude VonStroke.

What’s a good camping memory you have?

“I used to go to a camp in the Adirondack mountains when I was 11 years old. The counselors would throw a brick into the cabin in the middle of the night and wake everyone up to go visit ‘the snake pit.’ We were all terrified but it ended up just being a trip to go get ice cream in the bus and it was awesome.”

What’s an awkward/embarrassing camping memory you have?

“I was chubby and on the first mountain I had to climb I had an asthma attack. A counselor took me aside and told me he used to be fat and that I could do something about it. I started paying more attention to what I ate and how much exercise I did after that but it was so embarrassing. So now I’m still fat but I work out a lot so I have a belly but I can still do 40 push ups in a row.”

If you could go camping anywhere in the world, where would you go and who would you go with?

“I would go with my brother because we never get any time alone, we both have families. I think that would be a great R&R trip just me and my bro somewhere on a lake where there was fishing and hiking. After that I would do a huge family camping trip with all the kids and all the craziness.”

What’s your ideal playlist for camping?
“No music just nature sounds.”

How would you survive if you were stranded in the woods for a week?
“First I would figure out how to make fire and find a water source and then I would go from there. I watch a lot of Survivor. If you can’t make fire and drink water you are going to die! Then I would start making crazy animal traps to try and eat.”

Have you ever had a spiritual experience out in nature?
“Yes. A sense of calm has come over me and a feeling that I should be present in the moment. .. it’s actually similar to a feeling I have had once in a while while performing, where I let my body relax and I look at all the happy faces and realize how great life can be.”

What are you looking forward to most about dirtybird Campout?
“The comrades, the outfits and the silly activities. There are also a few DJ sets I’m completely geeked about.”

Which artists are you looking forward to seeing and why?
“One special guest is playing live and I’m over the moon about it but I cant say who it is. I am a huge fan of Dan Bell, &Me & Eprom. Most of the acts I’m super stoked on are all at the after hours parts of the festival, not to say that everyone isn’t great but I’ve seen everyone on dirtybird a few times now. I put all the weird stuff that I love on the late night schedule.”
