New house and techno club Contact to open in Tokyo in April

The caliber of Tokyo’s club culture is set to rise this spring, with a new club called Contact opening in the capital’s Shibuya district. The two-room venue will occupy a basement which used to house one of Derrick May’s frequent haunts, Air, which has since shut its doors.

The club has booked an impressive calendar for April and May, set to host sets from Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Mister Saturday Night, Laurent Garnier, Francois K, DJ Nobu, and more. The lineup isn’t the only aspect of Contact reminiscent of a Berlin club — amateur photography is banned inside the venue. Berghain resident and curator behind the compilation series Function will play Contact’s launch party on April 1.

“We want Contact to be a venue where young DJs would work hard and be proud to stand inside the DJ booth. A place where the DJs can grow alongside the venue, and eventually call it their ‘home’,” explains club director Yuko Ichikawa.
