‘Britain’s Oldest DJ,’ DJ Derek, found dead

Bristol-born DJ Derek was lovingly called “Britain’s Oldest DJ.” He got his start spinning reggae records in the late ’70s and built a steady career for himself as a DJ that lasted all the way until 2013 and took him to major events including Glastonbury Festival and The Big Chill. In 2012, he received the Lord Mayor’s medal reward for his contributions to Bristol’s music scene.

Sadly, his family announced in July 2015 that the local legend had been missing for several weeks. Numerous sighting reports had since come into police hand since the family’s plea for help went out with the most recent one being a sighting in Waterloo in 2012. However, it looks like the worst case scenario may be true as recently uncovered human remains in a woodland area just outside of Bristol contained personal items that hint at this being the case.

A cause of death has yet to be decided and is currently being labeled by authorities as “unexplained.” DJ Derek would have been 73 years-old.
