MTV announces the 2016 VMAs will take place at Madison Square Garden

First held in 1984 at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) will return to the Big Apple for its 2016 event on August 28 at Madison Square Garden. This is the first time the VMAs will be live broadcasted from the iconic venue after its last show in NYC took place at the Barclays Center in 2013.

The 2015 VMAs were hosted by Miley Cyrus at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre with notable moments including Cyrus’ unexpected album announcement, Kanye West announcing his candidacy for the 2020 presidential race, and Jack Ü’s first VMA for best Visual Effects for their Grammy-winning single, “Where R Ü Now,” with Justin Bieber. The 2016 VMAs’ host has yet to be announced.

Bill de Blasio, the Mayor of New York City, made a statement to MTV about the event’s return to the city, “We are excited that MTV will bring the VMAs back to its original home of New York City. From the red carpet to the accolades to the performances — and everything in between — the VMAs are an incredible showcase for so many talented artists. It also goes without saying that hosting the awards in our city means a boost to our small businesses and restaurants and more jobs for the thousands of crew members who work to bring the show into homes around the world.”
