Watch This: Usher joins Major Lazer on stage at Coachella to honor Prince

There’s a poetic note to the loss of Prince during the same week as Coachella. The music world lost one of its greatest icons during the biggest musical celebration of the year. Tributes from the world’s most influential artists poured in during Coachella’s second weekend, from LCD Soundsystem’s rendition of “Controversy” to Gallant and Sufjan Steven’s chilling “Purple Rain” cover. Prince had once again united the masses with his music, though this time channeled through Coachella’s star-studded lineup.

Diplo and Major Lazer honored Prince as well, enlisting the help of a younger generation’s pop and R&B don to pay their respects as Usher joined the dancehall trio on stage. Together they closed the set celebrating Prince’s life and work with “1999” and “I Would Die 4 U.” Usher surprised the crowd, driving home Major Lazer’s performance with a heartfelt final note.

Prince was a rockstar; he knew parties weren’t meant to last. Major Lazer undoubtedly embodied that spirit and left it all at the decks to close out Coachella’s second weekend.
