Feed Me releases new Spor EP, ‘Black Eyed’

In early 2015, Feed Me revived his coveted drum ‘n’ bass alias Spor — the namesake which originally brought UK producer Jon Gooch to notoriety back in the mid-2000s. With a 17-track album, Caligo, as well as inaugural Spor Essential Mix duties, it was a triumphant return for Gooch’s edgier moniker. Now he’s released his first Spor project since then: Black Eyed.

The 5-track EP finds Gooch crafting some of his most interesting drum ‘n’ bass concoctions to date. The first is “Mind of an Insomniac,” a collaboration with revered producer and sound designer Icicle along with London MC, Linguistics. The second is “Know You,” perhaps the EP’s most melodic offering with its vocal hook and brief symphonic bridge. “Woodruff” with Phace offers some chunky rhythms and crafty half-time, while “Blurred Vision” showcases Jon’s penchant for cinematic sound design mixed with thunderous drum programming. Lastly, there’s “Figaro,” likely the EP’s most intriguing offering, offering amorphous leads backed by an addictive groove.

All in all, Black Eyed is supreme evidence of Jon Gooch’s ability to still push the envelope in his original genre. While none of the tracks stray too far from the confines of drum ‘n’ bass, their compositions are packed to the brim with alluring oddities and idiosyncrasies — the kind which only a producer doubles as Feed Me could deliver.

Spor’s Black Eyed EP is out now on Jon Gooch’s Sotto Voce imprint. Stream it below:
