Urban meets indie dance on rare form for MOODS ‘A Beautiful Mind’ EP

Already boasting two EPs for Kraak & Smaak’s Boogie Angst label, Dutch prospect MOODS was already proving a rare and wonderful addition to the imprint’s roster at the outset of 2016. Returning with four brand new tracks just in time for the Summer, the Rotterdam based producer with a knack for slick beats and beautiful melodies shows that there is more to his musical agenda than nostalgic indie dance.

EP namesake ‘A Beautiful Mind’ steps in with the sweeping leads and that twitchy groove that sends listeners back into the soul of the mid 70s, the kind of unpretentious nostalgia we have come to expect from MOODS over the past couple of years. There’s no gimmicks here though, the melodies match with killer beats once again to spotlight a rare fusion of old meets new school stamina, which lingers right through to closing number ‘The Hero.’ Whilst ‘Evolve’ plays into a more hip-hop orientated agenda reminiscent of early landmark ‘Love Is Real,’ it is the EP’s lead single ‘How I feel‘ alongside Sam Wills that pushes thing forward. As a standout vocal single, an essence of Disclosure-esque accessibility matches that otherwise immediately recognisable studio getup, landing one of his most mature and pop orientated singles to date.

MOODS makes instrumental records that could quite easily host up-and-coming rappers or hot vocal prospects alike, but the A Beautiful Mind EP is yet further proof of his unique vantage point over the European circuit right now.
