It’s easy to forgive GRiZ for waiting nearly a full year since his last all-new production, his soulful goodbye to summer Chasing The Golden Hour Pt. 1. Within the past year the Michigan-based producer has seen his responsibilities expand from funk master to label head and mentor of new talent with the launch of All Good Records and his support of up-and-coming artists such as Sunsquabi, The Geek x VRV, and Falcon Punch. Luckily, the sax man is finally back with his latest “Before I Go.”
Coming in at over seven-minutes long, the track has some serious heft. Featuring the soulful vocals of frequent collaborator Leo Napier, it encapsulates all the elements that have endeared GRiZ to his legions of fans. With no need to rush, the producer is free to feature meandering sax lines and whirling guitars before introducing thumping percussion, crunchy basslines, and an impressively adroit horn section, all while cleverly blending the live instruments with the electronic elements. Each instrument gets its time in the spotlight and the result is an undeniable funk gem that’ll have the dance floor moving throughout its runtime.
