Dancing Astronaut Presents 5 Under 5k: Vol. 10

5 Under 5k is a feature on Dancing Astronaut dedicated to spotlighting talented upcoming and undiscovered artists who we believe deserve more exposure. Each edition of 5 Under 5k will highlight five artists from a wide variety of genres with under 5,000 followers on SoundCloud (at the time of writing).

Australian producer Prismism starts off this edition of 5 Under 5k with some dark and heavy sounds. Cavernous, bass-filled soundscapes are present in much of his music, and are becoming a unique trait that is distinguishing his music from the rest.

His latest single, “Abstraction,” was just released September 26, and is a bold statement from the young talent. In “Abstraction,” Prismism uses a venomous combination of dark and acid house to rumble the sub-frequencies and, at times, bite the high-end with a 303-esque synth.

One of the ultimate goals of anyone writing music is to create a certain feeling and follow it throughout an entire piece in such a way to make it come alive. With their consistent sound of funk house, the duo THANKS are accomplishing just that.

All funk music has always been about dancing, and their newest track, “Livin’ My Life” proves that fact yet again. Retro synth stabs, a smooth, uncrowded bassline, and uplifting vocal samples — with just enough repetition to bring out the house aspect of the track — provide the perfect backdrop to a good night.

It was only within the last decade that making decently produced music became available to just about anyone with a computer. The music scene has only begun to blossom as a result of this, though promising signs are arriving more frequently every year. Among the growing number of talented new producers and songwriters is RetroPhunk.

Severely catchy riffs are tastefully interspersed with interesting chord progressions throughout his latest track, titled “Hard To Breathe,” which showcases the production quality he is starting to attain. The main melody is simple and meaningful, and will easily lodge itself in the listener’s head for hours after.

The Beat Market is now open, and the grooves are fresh and ripe for the picking. A funky, technical style shows in the single, “Doors,” the first release from their forthcoming album Sun Machine, which will be out November 11. If the rest of the album is similar in overall quality, it will definitely be one to look out for.

A driving bassline provides presence throughout the majority of “Doors,” which develops into a bouncy progressive house groove. Although the vocals could perhaps use a little more reverb, Malika matches the energy of the track well, altogether providing an engaging listen from start to finish.

KYTES is a band that tastefully bridges the gap between indie and electronica, though leaning toward the indie in their originals. One great thing about thoughtful songwriting, of which KYTES has plenty, is that it lends itself very well to being remixed. Luckily, they have taken advantage of this and have a number of quality remixes on their SoundCloud worth checking out.

No remixes of their newest track, “As We Row,” have yet been released yet, though the original is amazing in and of itself. From using the funky guitar riff to build some smooth midtempo future funk to prominently featuring the catchy-yet-emotional vocals in the buildup and breaks of a huge melodic dubstep track, the possibilities are seemingly endless.
