Uproxx’s Uncharted series shines light on electro-cumbia pioneer El Dusty
Uproxx’s Uncharted series, which focuses on innovative musicians around the world, recently delved into the life and times of cumbia-electro pioneer El Dusty in its latest episode. The segment offers a glimpse at how the Corpus Christi DJ and producer is inventing a new genre by blending thousands of old cumbia records and his own unique mix of trap, electro and bass.
Building on a passion that began with a collection of cumbia records inherited by Dusty’s mom, and a talent grown from incessant practice on a pair of turntables his brother stole from a quinceanera, El Dusty has catapulted a local music trend into a movement that is rapidly sweeping the nation. In addition to being featured in the series (you can watch the episode below), El Dusty was recently nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category of Best Urban Fusion/Performance for his 2015 hit “Cumbia Anthem.” His forthcoming artist album is expected later this year.
