NBC buys rights to develop American version of ‘The Stream’ TV series

With American Idol having its final season this year, it seemed that musical competition television series were a dying breed. However, it was recently announced that NBC has bought the rights to develop their own version of the new television series called The Stream, which saw its first season this year on the Norwegian channel TV2.

The show will be produced by NBC’s brand new reality TV production offspring, NBC Universal Television Alternative Studio, in partnership with TV2, Monster, Nordic World, and Little Hill, and will be by far the largest TV export to ever come from Norway.

The show is to be structured in such a way to take advantage of the power of the internet, with the number of streams on submissions determining who moves forward in the competition and who gets cut. Anyone wishing to enter can upload videos of themselves to the dedicated streaming platform, which can then be shared around the web.

The top 100 videos with the most streams will be able to try their luck in front of live judges. However, at every round, the number of streams will be the ultimate determining factor.
