One of Maceo Plex’s specialties is re-working songs into heavy, brooding clips which bring a welcome darkness to the dancefloor. Such is the case with his interpretation of Sailor & I’s haunting piece “Black Swan.” He begins by adding in powerful kicks and subtle rumbles of white noise to the original, which prime it for a dimly-lit club setting. The darkness set forth by these elements accents the piece’s vocals well, which are tied together by foreboding, futuristic synth roars which add even more energy to the finished composition. The end result is a stripped down, yet highly impactful version of “Black Swan” which has finally been released after a considerable time spent as a desired ID within his recent sets.
The Ellum owner’s upcoming album Solar is also expected to surface in early 2017 after roughly two years of budding excitement around it. To satiate his fans in the meantime, Maceo dropped a surprise album Journey To Solar on November 18. This mini-album was written concurrently with Solar, and shows off the more club-friendly cuts he’d been producing at the time.
