Paul Oakenfold announces Mount Everest performance

Slightly over three and a third miles, or 17,000 feet above sea level, Mount Everest base camp is soon to see an unlikely visitor. Paul Oakenfold is poised to be the first DJ ever to ascend the legendary climb to the Everest Base Camp on April 11. The event is set to live stream on Extreme and the artist’s official Facebook page. Thirty years ago, the DJ traveled to a little white island in the Mediterranean, launching the luxuriant explosion of club culture on Ibiza. His Everest Base Camp ascension, and subsequent tour is meant to commemorate that revolutionary moment in dance music.

As aberrant as performing on Everest is, this is not out of the norm for the English producer. From sampling Hunter S. Thompson’s spoken words in “Nixon’s Spirit” to producing the theme song the the UK’s Big Brother television show, Oakenfold is not a stranger to the strange. He is the first DJ to perform on the highest peak in the world, adding this unique venture to his list of firsts, including The Great Wall of China, The Hollywood Bowl, Coachella’s main stage, and Madison Square Garden. Because Oakenfold carries so much weight within the dance music canon, his climb to Everest Base Camp could usher in a wave of mountaineering DJs, as he did in heralding the explosion on Ibiza.
