Before Pasquale Rotella built his Insomniac empire around Electric Daisy Carnival in the late 90’s, the very first incarnation of the event was in fact created by a man who went by the name of Steve Kool-Aid and Gary Richards, who took on the stage moniker Destructo and created the equally successful HARD events. Their brainchild was conceived in 1991 as an event in Pomona that served as part of a series of Kool-Aid’s “Original Mickey” parties.

The debut EDC’s original poster shows it followed much of the same philosophy as the festival that takes place today, promising a ferris wheel and tornado ride to accompany the beats that would be played out by Destructo and Kool-Aid themselves, alongside Eli and Michael Cook. Capping things off were a slew of performers that would also enhance the show’s visual nature. Though far more rudimentary than what Rotella has since developed EDC into, the 1991 version certainly still looks like it was a fun time.
