Get a first look at the new Carl Cox and Martin Garrix documentary, ‘What We Started’

When news broke last year of the forthcoming dance music documentary What We Started, many fans were left wondering how the filmmakers might tie together the seemingly disparate worlds occupied by lead stars Martin Garrix and Carl Cox.

Early promo for the film touted Garrix and Cox as the perfect leads for the film; while the 54-year old Cox’s legendary residency at Space Ibiza is winding down, Garrix (who just turned 21) is preparing to release his debut album on his burgeoning imprint.

An exclusive first look at the film, though, will likely put malcontents at ease. The clip shows Garrix coping with the unfathomable pressures of superstardom — which he achieved at only 17 years old — and contrasts it with the disbelief of veterans like Seth Troxler, Paul Oakenfold, Steve Angello, and David Guetta.

Though the commentary is more disbelieving than mean-spirited, the clip highlights the tension between the weathered outlook of dance music veterans who paved the way and their EDM prodigy counterparts who seemingly rocket to superstardom overnight.

If the first look is any indication, the documentary will be a nuanced look inside those relationships and the conflicting ideologies that propel the modern dance music markets and scenes.

‘What We Started’ is slated to premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival this Friday, June 16th.
