With his fifth studio album Boo Boo, Chaz Bear a.k.a. Toro Y Moi has put forth what he considers his most personal musical endeavor to date. Out now via Carpark Records, Boo Boo is the groovy synth-pop album that the summer has been needing. Toro’s latest comes to life in a captivatingly redolent short film produced and directed by Company Studio. The film follows Toro as he explores the picturesque Bay Area.
Bear created Boo Boo as a way to cope with the stress of his newfound success and fame. The revealing nature of Boo Boo‘s 12 deeply revealing tracks paints a picture of an artist looking to find balance in his life once more. The producer had to learn how to balance the joy of attaining his goals with the confusion that came with the distortion of his reality.
For this album, Toro invoked inspiration from a number of innovative artists including Daft Punk, Frank Ocean to Oneohtrix Point Never, Kashif, and Gigi Masin stating that “I recognized that the common thread between these artists was their attention to a feeling of space, or lack thereof.”
Boo Boo is an idyllic summertime synth-pop soundtrack. Lead singles “Girl Like You” and “You and I” cement this further and truly showcase Toro’s undeniable knack for crafting hypnotic dream-pop.
