TRL is making an MTV comeback this fall, details

Breathe deep, everyone. We are having a 90’s music moment right now. Nine Inch Nails recently put out a new project, A Tribe Called Quest just finished back-to-back headlining slots two of the top festivals in North America, and MTV is about to debut a new show called Total Request Live this fall. You read that right, MTV is expected to bring back TRL. Starting in October, TRL will debut its second run as part of network president Chris McCarthy’s ongoing push to bring live broadcasting back to MTV’s playbook. The show’s original run lasted from 1998 to 2008, and was popularly touted as one of the network’s flagship programs during its early years.

The blast from the past does come with some notable 2017 modifications, including a newly constructed state-of-the-art studio facing Times Square and a new slate of hosts suited for the Generation Z crowd, with Chicago radio host Erik Zachary and rapper-comedian DC Young Fly already locked in. MTV is also reportedly in discussions with Youtube personalities to fill the remaining host positions. Unfortunately for those basking in the nostalgia, this does mean that the new and improved TRL will leave Carson Daly in retirement.

MTV has recorded two months of back-to-back growth for the first time in four years, and with programming underway geared at refined attention to their core demographics, it could signal a new chapter for the network in today’s televised music landscape.
