Meet the underground talent of CRSSD Fest: Dena Amy

San Diego’s CRSSD Fest – presented by FNGRS CRSSD — has become a sanctuary for underground electronic music fans. The upcoming Fall edition is pumped with a wide array of unadulterated talent, where headliners including RÜFÜS DU SOL, Richie Hawtin, and Hot Since 82 are joined by up-and-coming acts like Breakbot, Solardo, and Hito to make for a weekend of top quality music from all over the underground spectrum. To dig a big deeper into the lineup, we’ve tapped some of our favorite acts on the bill for an interview series before the festival.

South African-born artist Dena Amy has built an impressive résumé over the years comprised of acting, modeling, singing, and most recently DJing. In 2016, she took the Do Lab stage at Coachella followed by a tour stint in Australia with Rufus Du Sol on their sold out album tour.

Since then, Dina Amy has released her debut single “Wait For You” via Sydney-based indie label Sweat It Out, as well as a handful of collaborations, making her one of the most exciting rising artists in the house scene.

At what point did you realize that Djing could be a career for you, rather than simply a passion?

I had been DJing for years but it always came second to my acting career, I think it hit me the hardest at Coachella when I was handed an artist pass with my name on it, all of a sudden it really sunk in that I was no longer just attending these events and festivals to watch other artists and get inspired but I was there to perform myself.

What’s the most important project in your pipeline at the moment?

Im constantly trying to find ways to combine my passions of music, film and dance- right now I am directing and creating my own film clip for my new single which incorporates all my weird artistic creativity and ideas. Ive also been touring non stop so i am looking forward to getting back into the studio and writing new music.

What’s your opinion of the dance scene in the US right now?

House music is becoming more mainstream, which is really exciting for me, as people are really starting to understand what I play and make.

What are you looking forward to most about CRSSD Fest?

All my friends who have attended CRSSD festival say its incredible. I am just so excited to be there in the sunshine on that stellar lineup.

If you could be another artist for a day, who would you pick?

David August, He is so gifted, I think he is a genius and my biggest idol. I saw him three nights in a row in Berlin. The music he creates is absolute magic, I would like to be inside his brain for a day!

If you could recommend three artists to catch from the lineup, who would you pick?

Rufus Du Sol, Broods and of course Dixon.

If you were recruited to provide an Essential Mix in 2017, what’s the one song you couldn’t leave out?

I can’t stop listening to Thinking of You (feat. Camille Safiya) [Serge Devant’s Floor Cut] It’s perfect.
