Nelly detained for alleged sexual assault

Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., better known as rapper Nelly, was detained early in the morning of Oct.7 while on tour in Washington state after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted by the artist on a tour bus, reports TMZ.

Nelly is currently on tour with the country music group Florida Georgia Line. He was released early in the morning Oct. 7 from custody and that subsequent charges are withheld “pending investigation,” per his attorney, Scott Rosenblum.

The police department in Auburn, Washington — the location of the alleged assault — released a statement that declared at 3:48 a.m., a female called 911 to report that she was sexually assaulted by the rapper.

According to the police, officers investigated the report and Nelly was taken into custody at 4:37 a.m.

Nelly has since denied the allegation in a statement emailed from his lawyer. Per Rosenblum, the accusation is “completely fabricated … devoid of credibility and is motivated by greed and vindictiveness.”

Rosenblum continued, “I am confident once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges. Nelly is prepared to address and pursue all legal avenues to redress any damage caused by this clearly false allegation.”

Nelly has been a chart-topping hip-hop artist since his debut album in 2000. His 2002 single “Hot in Herre,” earned him a Grammy for Best Male Rap Solo Performance. Neither Nelly himself nor Florida Georgia Line has yet to make a comment.

As of the time of writing, Florida Georgia Line’s tour is set to continue in Portland, Oregon Oct. 7.
