Is Apple ending the Itunes store?

Recent reports are circulating that Apple will terminate the iTunes store by early 2019. Digital Music News reports that the media player turned streaming service has been planning the service’s termination since as early as 2016.

Apple introduced Apple Music back in 2015 in order to compete with streaming giants such as Spotify. Despite rapid advances in digital infrastructure and user engagement, Apple Music remains trailing Spotify in paying subscribers by nearly 30 million.

If reports of the companies phasing out of the iTunes store are indeed correct, the aforementioned timeline leaves Apple with two more holiday seasons to sell music, after which they will begin to phase out of the iTunes store altogether.

Apple is putting the final touches on an official deal to acquire Shazam, the music recognition app, per reports of their merger that recently arose. It will be interesting to see how the tech giant incorporates Shazam into their fold, especially if their plan to phase out their own music streaming-related services comes to fruition.
