New book detailing Massive Attack’s roots in Bristol to be released

A new book outlining Massive Attack‘s artistic roots within Bristol’s dense club culture will be released in April.

The English trip hop group — composed of Robert “3D” Del Naja, Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, and formerly Andy “Mushroom” Vowles — elevated themselves as storied legends throughout the 1990s through a trio of critically acclaimed releases, culminating in the awe inspiring, definitively-fabled release of 1998’s LP Mezzanine. Their influence has lasted the test of time, too.  2010’s Heligoland garnered the nomination of best underground dance track for the album’s second single “Paradise Circus.”

Massive Attack: A Bristol Story releases April 9, with pre-orders available here.

According to a press release, French author and reporter Melissa Chemam is “dedicated to the history of the band Massive Attack and to their relationship with their home town of Bristol.”

Chemam — who has worked for France 24, the BBC World Service and Radio France International — spent more than three years completing the book, which she says is founded on an extensive interview series with Robert Del Naja.

“Her book examines the influences of the founding members of Massive Attack – 3D, Daddy G and Mushroom – their collaborations, inner tensions and politics,” reads the press release, “as well as the way they opened the door for other Bristol musicians and artists including Banksy.”
