Electric Zoo ’13 Artist Spotlight: Alex Metric

One of the most consistent presences in electronic music, Alex Metric, has been quietly and expertly creating unique club tracks since he got his start in 2007.  Drawing influences from indie rock and the cut-and-paste style of France’s Ed Banger crew, Metric developed his own unique style birthed out of his love for big beats and breaks. Not confined to one sound or style, he frequently finds himself retouching numerous genres with an impeccable French electro finish.

Most well known for his original production “Open Your Eyes” alongside ex-Mafioso Steve Angello, Metric’s catalog far exceeds that of his breakout hit. He has a bevy of remixes under his belt, including a heavy-handed electro rendition of The Beastie Boy’s “Sabotage” and most recently a touched-up, Balearic spin of Foals’ “Bad Habit.”  While genre defiant, Alex Metric’s productions all share a similar vein, and regardless of the style he is experimenting with, each track is grippingly groovy.

With each successive iteration of his Ammunition series (he’s up to three) Metric has showcased a brand new side of his ever-evolving style. Take “Prophecies” and compare it to “Rave Weapon,” and you’ll get an idea of the diversity of Alex Metric’s talents.

Currently flying under Skrillex’s OWSLA flag, Metric feels he is in good company; “I think OWSLA is a very open-minded camp,” he mentions to FreshWetPaint, “[Skrillex] is playing stuff no one is expecting Sonny to play. It feels like it’s all coming together. The kids go with it, there’s no confused faces.”

Bursting at the seams with a style and panache that has recently become a rarity, an Alex Metric set is a place for musical discovery and he has been known to incorporate the most unlikely styles into his performances. His DJs sets mimic his production catalog, establishing a diverse but cohesive look at what’s bouncing around inside the Brit’s head at any given moment. His latest August DJ mix is described as “Disco Pogo for Punks in Pumps” and paints an accurate picture of the sort of set Mr. Metric may deliver on Day 3 of Electric Zoo. But then again, there really is no predicting what tracks will fall inside his hour behind the decks — and isn’t that the whole point?
