Electric Zoo ’13 Artist Spotlight: Oliver bring West coast cool to New York’s hottest festival
Los Angeles-based duo Oliver have managed to encapsulate all of the dirty, sexy cool of LA’s dance music scene and bottle it for easy consumption. Creators of the pervasive “MYB” off their Mechanical EP, Oliver’s Fool’s Gold debut quickly established them as two of the tightest groove technicians in modern dance music. Whether creating mixes with a casual strut, or going full throttle into the French electro heyday, Oliver are as daring behind the decks as their catalog would suggest.
Seemingly ignorant of the status quo, the two remix and recreate tracks based on whims and have reworked Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” reviving the classic with a charming disco finish. Borrowing heavily from their birth decade, the pair’s heavy ’80s influence shines through in all of their productions. Be it groovy R&B, boombox ready hip hop, or soaring synthpop, they have managed to create a cocktail of styles and sounds that is daringly original while undeniably cohesive.
They saw their original rise to prominence with their original “Dirty Talk” that received heavy support from French kingpin Busy P and disco house connoisseur, Alan Braxe. From there they joined up with the Fool’s Gold family, collaborating with head honcho A-Trak on “Disco Nap” before releasing their debut EP, Mechanical to worldwide acclaim.
