Editors’ Selections: Week of August 19th, 2013

Editors’ Selections is an opportunity for your favorite Dancing Astronaut contributors to talk about some of the music they’re listening to that we might not always get an opportunity to post about from week to week. Sometimes it’s out there, sometimes it’s obscure, but you’ll always get a peek into what we’re loving behind closed doors.

Matt:

The Polish Ambassador – Journey to the Center of Jah

In honor of Burning Man’s impending amazement, it’s only fitting to spotlight one of its stalwart musical sojourners in California producer and performer the Polish Ambassador. The Ambassador’s music is impossible to classify as anything except genre-bending and boundary-breaking. “Journey to the Center of Jah” was his gateway song for me, a meandering future-reggae trek through the cosmos that had me hooked from my first listen.
Dan:
DJ Anna – Can’t Sleep
I have continued to admire Brazil’s DJ Anna and her ability to purvey her deep techno tendencies without the shameless bathtub shots. Her latest offering for Tronic, “Can’t Sleep,” digs deeper into those buoyant instrumental vibes that her studio output to date has mustered. Heavy bass work and minimalistic melodic swirls ornament this groove-savvy offering, making positive stead for a label 118-releases wiser and a club-dominating woman consistently on the up for 2013.
Allegra:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Always (Overjoy Remix)

If there is one category of track I am guaranteed to click on, it is a Yeah Yeah Yeahs remix. Karen O’s voice is just so utterly remixable that I have yet to be disappointed by an effort, and Overjoy’s take on “Always” is no exception. Taken off the YYY’s latest album Mosquito, “Always” is a sort of dreamy synthy rockabilly tune, complete with reverberating scales and what I hope are castanets. Overjoy – who is LA duo DJ Metric and Hoff – throws a snappy house beat underneath and trades the retro for future, taking some of the eccentric edge off for the uninitiated. Oh, and it’s free.

Cara:
Flavio Acaron & Hugh Harry – You Might Think I’m Crazy (Michael Jansons Remix)
If there was a track that got stuck in my head this week, it was Michael Jansons remix of Flavio Acaron & Hugh Harry’s collaboration on “You Might Think I’m Crazy,” released last year on Neim. I don’t know whether it’s the irresistible filtered bounce to the heart of the song or the far-off feel of the hardly discernable vocals, but it’ll stick with you.
Dylan:
Madeon – The City
Taken back by Madeon’s evolution and his advanced, high-quality production on the recent “Technicolor,” his catalog is worth a revisit. Although limited to few singles throughout his brief dance music tenure, each single released by the phenom leaves nothing to be desired but more Madeon music. Always a favorite is “The City,” where the youngster has best complimented vocals and his colorful sound myriad reflects his sonic persona.
