Culprit flaunts the next generation of underground dance aptitude for 'Above The City 3'
Now celebrating six years as a sacred event and four years as a label, Culprit has captivated the promising North American underground circuit with a concept that often seems too perfect to be true. Past the rooftop parties at downtown-LA landmark The Standard and a landmark offering in the form of Justin Jay’s The Jaguar EP, Above The City 3 signs off another year of poignant floor fuel with their latest and greatest collection of underground spoils from across the globe. With just seven tracks at their mercy, Above The City 3 reassuringly wastes little time with B-sides and remixes. The juxtaposition between dreamy indie dance merger “10 Miles” from Ali Gobi and Lonely Boy’s melodically charged low-end romp “Somwhere” is yet further proof of Culprit’s ear for the outstanding where left-of-field new talent is concerned. Returning marks from both Special Case and Adriatique are more than welcome to the equation, but it is in Raxon’s “Nightwalker” and Dance Spirit, Balcazar & Sardo collaboration “110 Stairs” that we find the most striking proof of the successful continuation of the outspoken series. Much like tourist trail of its originating city, it is too easy to overlook a genuine cultural evolution with so much focus on the front-lines. Once again, Culprit offer one more reason to believe that the integrity of independent dance music and its next generation of talent are well preserved where this renowned roof party-turned-budding musical powerhouse is concerned.
